Features of caring for dogs with a northern type of coat
One of the most difficult types of dog hair to care for is the northern one. Such breeds include husky, Samoyeds, malamutes and other “wool” representatives of FCI group 5, which boast a double undercoat.
Care for dogs with a northern type of hair has its own characteristics.
The coat of these dogs is thick, double and must be constantly updated to make the dog look beautiful. If you run the "northern" dog, do not take care of it correctly, the sight will be extremely sad.
A great influence on the condition of the coat of these dogs is provided by nutrition and genetics.
Pets with a northern type of wool are extremely difficult to wash and dry, as their "fur coat" is extremely thick. It takes only 15 to 20 minutes to soak the “downy shell”.
The coat of these dogs has one virtue - it is self-cleaning. If the coat is in good condition, then the dirt, drying up, will fall off by itself. However, I would still recommend washing your pet at least once a month, as dirty hair does not grow.
Only clean wool can grow!
There is an opinion that you can’t wash your dog often, since we are depriving the coat of a protective fat layer. But the fat layer is restored in 2 to 3 days. And if frequent washing was harmful, then all show dogs would have been bald for a long time, however, on the contrary, they shine and smell. Because their hair is “live”, it is washed and nourished, breathing.
It is better to wash the dog in the bath, and not in the shower, as even the most well-bred dog wants to get out of this unpleasant place as soon as possible, and the shower provides all the conditions for escape. As a result, it may take an hour to persuade the dog to "tolerate a little". Great if you have a special tool to tie the dog.
I ask too woolly four-legged clients to lie down in the water for about 20 minutes, so that the wool is wet, and this will even reduce water consumption. Trying to water a dog with a northern type of coat from the "rain" can lead to even the most patient owner - you will pour water on your four-legged friend for 10 minutes, and it will simply drain, while the undercoat will remain dry.
Drying the “northern” beauties is better in a special room, as the wool blows off and flies in different directions during drying, and then you will scrape down the fluff from the walls.
However, you can organize a “bathing day" at home, if you have a powerful hairdryer (minimum 2000 watts). But tune in to the fact that drying the dog will take a long time (about 3 hours, or even more).
When drying, be sure to use a slip (slicker) or comb. In this way, you will help the air reach every hair.
The hairdryer nozzle should be kept at a distance of 20 - 25 cm from the dog’s skin, as too hot air will damage the coat and skin.
An important part of caring for dogs with a northern type of coat is combing. It is necessary to comb the "northern" dogs at least once a week, and during the molting period - every day.
All of the above is enough to care for your pet, but there is much more trouble with show dogs, and you probably can not do without the help of a professional groomer.
